Where does being 'well' begin?

Christina Salcedas is Global Director of Education at Aromatherapy Associates,  responsible for the company’s education vision and strategy. Here she is shooting from the hip about the importance of wellbeing in the workplace - not just for happy staff, but for successful company’s too.

We are at work for around 260 days a year, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a huge amount of attention is now being payed to how we spend our time there, how we look after ourselves when we aren’t there and work’s impact on our productivity, as well as our overall wellbeing. It’s about time!

Employee wellbeing is now an essential component in any successful, progressive company

In the UK, stress is known to be the most common work related illness, with 12.5 million working days lost due to stress-related conditions in 2016/17. Lack of sleep is linked to a numerous of health problems including cognitive dysfunction, depression, stress, Type II diabetes and weight gain. We know our nutritional input has a huge impact on our performance so it’s in everyone’s benefit that a light is shone on keeping healthy and happy, especially at work.

Employee wellbeing is now an essential component in any successful, progressive company and presents a clear advantage when it comes to attracting and retaining engaged, focused, and loyal teams. It’s no wonder that one of the first things our CEO Tracey Woodward introduced, as well as an extensive library of self-help and motivational books, was Lunch and Learns.

Being in the spa industry and selling wellbeing it should go without saying that we need to be well ourselves

These talks cover an array of topics not simply surrounding health and wellbeing; they inspire creativity and allow the team to switch off for an hour; something that’s been proven to increase productivity. We’ve also tackled stress management at the office, conversational skills, public speaking and presentation skills as well as benefits of embroidery, office yoga and meditation, mindful snacking, and most recently Melissa Hemsley came in to teach us how to cook nutritionally in 30 minutes!

Being in the spa industry and selling wellbeing it should go without saying that we need to be well ourselves in order to support our guests and clients to do the same. In the last few years, wellness has truly shifted into a societal and cultural movement that not only benefits us as individuals but benefits employers, too – the best you can ask for your company is healthy and happy staff.

There are so many small changes that can be made with little effort to ensure your team are happy and healthy

From the outset, Geraldine and Sue’s aim for Aromatherapy Associates was to share the power of aromatherapy and what better way than in the workplace? In the office, Frankincense is a firm favourite in the afternoon to help us all focus and DeStress Muscle Gel is always on hand when the aches start to kick in.

Self-care truly is the new healthcare

There are so many small but great changes that can be made with very little effort and financial strain to ensure your team are happy and healthy. As a brand we are sharing our “Workplace Hacks” via our Wellbeing in the Workplace sessions with spa partners, and they are ever increasing in popularity as we begin to realise that self-care truly is the new healthcare.
