Could electric muscle stimulation be spa revenue stream?

EMS, or Electrical Muscle Stimulation, might sound like a new form of torture, but it could be the next big thing for spas looking to increase their revenue streams in alternative ways.

German manufacturer miha bodytec offers an EMS system that enhances strength and conditioning and is launching into the spa and medi spa markets this year.

According to the research, EMS can be more effective for muscle conditioning and strengthening than going to the gym. Studies by the ukactive Research Institute have shown that, in specific circumstances, users can get ‘notable results’ when combining EMS with basic functional exercises as part of a physically active lifestyle.

EMS originates from rehab and sports performance but can be used by anyone wanting to improve strength and tone the body, without spending hours in the gym. miha bodytec’s system uses technology to amplify the signals the brain sends to the muscles to make them contract, making the tissue work harder and more effectively and making a shorter session more intense, and therefore more effective, more quickly.

“miha bodytec is targeted to time-precious, non-gym goers, so sits perfectly within the spa treatment setting,” says Caroline Richings, who works in Business Development for the brand.  “A 20-minute session once a week has been proven to have the same effect as up to four hours in the gym doing weights. The basic movement patterns, combined with EMS technology, provides users with the results of an intense workout without the ‘hot and sweaty’ element of a traditional gym session. And the commercials are equally attractive.”
