Six Senses opens in the land of the Thunder Dragon

Six Senses opens in the land of the Thunder Dragon

Six Senses Bhutan has opened the first three of five boutique lodges in Thimphu, Punakha and Paro.

Located in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan, which is famous for its Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy, the lodges are designed to offer guests wellness, out-of-the-ordinary experiences and omni-present spirituality.

The four pillars of Bhutan’s GNH philosophy are sustainable development, environmental protection, cultural preservation and good governance. Each of these philosophies have been woven into the design and identity of Six Senses Bhutan.

The three lodges – spread over the west and central valleys of the Himalayan kingdom – will be joined by two more in Gangtey and Bumthang, allowing guests to embark on a ‘Six Senses Journey’ across the key valleys of Bhutan.

Located in the capital, Six Senses Thimphu places strong emphasis on the grand architectural elements of a dzong (fortress) and clouds. Six Senses Punakha takes inspiration from the farms and vegetable terraces across the low-lying valley in which it sits. Six Senses Paro is located overlooking the Paro Valley, next to the ancient stone ruins of a dzong.

Each lodge has its own Spa & Wellness Centre with treatments designed to encapsulate the valley in which it is set. Wellness offering include hot stone baths in Thimphu and a spa room overlooking the ruins in Paro. Apyramid meditation room is planned at Gangtey and there will be a heated outdoor pool at Punakha.

General manager Sally Baughen says: “As we open our doors, guests can experience the transformative power of this magical destination through adventure, culture, serenity, cultural and enriching experiences. Six Senses Bhutan offers endless options for every kind of traveller to explore: from architecture and art, to birdwatching, botany, history, meditation, spirituality, sports, wellness and more.”
