Time is now for digital detoxes

Time is now for digital detoxes

A new poll has revealed the UK’s average daily screen time is a whopping three hours and 23 minutes – that’s almost 24 hours a week, or over 50 days a year!

With half of the UK’s smartphone users planning to reduce their screen time this year, perhaps more spas should be offering digital detox services as part of their treatment menu? Just under a third of people surveyed claimed that they had previously attempted a ‘digital detox’, and almost half said they felt better as a result.

The national poll, by digital agency Code Computerlove, found less than half of the 2,077 people surveyed were ‘definitely happy’ with the amount of time they spend looking at their phone each day, and three quarters (76%) admitting to devoting over two hours a day looking at their screens. Three in 10 agreed they find it harder to relax and de-stress when they have their phone with them.

Only a quarter of those questioned predicted digital technology will make us happier over the next 30 years and 31% said they think digital technology will make people less happy overall.

Code’s managing director, Louis Georgiou, says: “There is so much debate around the impacts of smartphone usage, but not as much around screen time specifically. The survey has given us much greater insight into how much time is actually spent on these devices, how people feel about their own habits – both the negatives and the positives – and, in turn, the need for businesses to create digital experiences that support, rather than undermine, people’s wellbeing.”
