Wellness tourism to take centre stage

Wellness tourism to take centre stage

No longer just a niche business, wellness tourism is rapidly growing according to hospitality specialists at Colliers International.

The firm’s hotels team says there are ever burgeoning numbers of ‘wellness tourists’ and these guests are demanding wellness centres, spas and retreats as well as changes to the whole offer during their stay. One example is a large increase in the number of guests asking for vegan menus.

“Wellness tourism used to be something of a niche activity within the sector but increasing numbers of guests are seeking this kind of stay,” says Ed Jefferson from Colliers International. “Veganism in particular has made huge strides and diets previously referred to as ‘fads’ are now the norm.”

Changes in consumer demand are not restricted to the menu alone – creating greater opportunities for spa. Jefferson says: “Figures suggest most hotel and spa bookings are made on smartphones rather than on a PC. Social media ‘influencers’ are the new online travel agencies, directing their many followers to a hotel or spa, rather than an OTA, which means there is no commission.” All things for savvy spa owners to consider as they make plans for 2019.
