Brits spend over £4,500 on self-care every year

Brits spend over £4,500 on self-care every year

Aqua, the credit card provider, surveyed brits to find out how much on average they spend every year in categories including spa days, manicures and pedicures, and massages. The study analyses which forms of self-care are most important to Brits, which wellness activities are costing people the most, and how the cost of living crisis has impacted how much they are spending on their personal well-being. The data revealed that Brits are spending over £300,000 on their appearance in their lifetime, with men spending over £90,000 more than women.

2,000 men and women completed the survey, which also revealed the gender split in annual spend, and showed, maybe surprisingly, that men spend an average of £1,114 more on personal care each year.

This survey revealed that men and women spend the most amount of money per year on massages, with women spending £457 and men spending £668. Some of the other most popular self-care activities amongst Brits are bath essentials, manicures/pedicures, beauty treatments and spa days.

The data also indicated that women are spending 35% less on beauty treatments including waxing and aesthetics procedures such as injectables, which account for £605 annually (m £699, f £516).

The survey also asked about wellness spend, with 90% of brits partaking in some form of self-care each month. Glaswegians are spending the most, at £67 per month, followed by London (£62), Sheffield (£58) and Belfast (£58).

The cost-of-living crisis has impacted nearly every area of our daily lives, and the data revealed that for many people, their self-care spending has been affected too. Nearly one-third (31%) of people in the UK say they are spending less on self-care due to rising costs. However, an additional 20% of people do say they are actually spending more in the current financial climate.
