Cancer therapy nail care

Cancer therapy nail care

With salons and spas becoming increasingly interested in offering options that are safe for those undergoing treatments for cancer, Malava has launched the first ever guide for nail care during cancer therapy.

The guide has been created by the Swiss brand to specifically look at the effects of treatments such as chemotherapy on the nails – some of which can be painful – and how cosmetic products may play a significant role in improving the wellbeing and nail beauty of the patient.

Lynn Gray, Mavala’s National Nail Expert, says: “We hope that in difficult times, Malava will help clients to feel better, using beauty and feminity as a force to help cancer sufferers overcome this hard time. Patients already know they have a serious illness, so the purpose of this brochure is to be positive. We are trying to help them to get through a difficult period. It is important to note that the efficiency of our products is not scientifically proven, but is thanks to experience of oncology hospital services in France.”

Chemotherapy drugs are known to effect not just cancerous cells, but skin, hair and nail cells too. They can damage the of the ungal matrix (nail matrix), causing several types of anomalies that can affect both finger and toenails. Problems can include ridged, breaking, splitting or thickened nails, hyperpigmentations, irregular pigmentation or appearance of stains, white spots and swelling around the nails.

Malava has created a series of specific treatment products including Mavala Scientifique Nail Hardener and Mava-Flex moisturising serum to fortify nails, a barrier base coat to protect nails during chemotherapy treatment and a series of colour polishes containing silicon dioxide, which may play a shield role and protect against side effects due to chemotherapy and other cancer therapies.
