Could 'Beer Yoga' become a UK trend?

Could 'Beer Yoga' become a UK trend?

The Los Angeles Times has reported that, across the pond in Long Beach, beer yoga is now officially ‘a thing’… as are wellness wine hikes in Malibu and alcohol-fuelled workouts including Vino and Vinyasa (wine yoga) and Scotch and Stretching.

But while wellness with an alcohol chaser flourishes in the US, could the idea open up an opportunity for UK spas?

Mixing beer, wine or cocktails with activities such as yoga could help make the entire spa and wellness experience seem less intimidating. Stephanie Serrano, the yoga instructor leading the monthly beer yoga class at the Federal bar in Long Beach, says: “Offering yoga in unique format styles brings in a different audience that might not have tried yoga in the first place. Hopefully, by doing that, they’ll learn something new about yoga and it helps to clear your mind and build community.

“I designed the class around the idea of balance, particularly the quest for work-life balance. So, I thought about poses that we could do that also would make it easy for us to grab the drink and hold it at the same time.”

Ever-so-slightly boozy wellness may foster a sense of experimentation and camaraderie, and a calmer state of mind, helping spa goers come into a more present sense of being. While it of course shouldn’t replace regular classes and serious wellness programmes, it’s certainly worth exploring as one-off classes to pique interest and drive footfall.
