COVID-19: Republic of Ireland ends coronavirus restrictions

The Irish government recently agreed to end almost all coronavirus restrictions from Saturday 22nd January - in a move attributed to the passing of the peak of the Omicron wave, and the country's high vaccine uptake.

Taoiseach, Micheal Martin made the landmark announcement in a televised address to the nation saying "Today is a good day."

Irish pubs, restaurants and other hospitality outlets can return to normal operations, and customers will not be asked for their digital COVID pass. The requirements for social distancing will also be dropped and a full return to the workplace has begun on a phased basis.

Some rules will however continue. The requirement to wear face masks including in salons and spas is being retained, until at least the end of February.
