Global Wellness Institute backs yoga therapy initiative

The Global Wellness Institute is driving a new initiative to have yoga therapy recognised as a legitimate wellness modality.

The initiative aims to spread awareness of the health benefits of yoga and dispel the misconception that yoga is simply a complementary therapy or alternative exercise programme.

A meta-analysis of nearly 50 studies published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings indicates that yoga practice, which promotes mental relaxation and breathing techniques, can have as much of a positive impact on high blood pressure as aerobic exercise.

Yoga Therapy Initiative chair and author, Bija Bennett, says: “As one of the world’s earliest systems of holistic health and self-care, yoga therapy is a low-tech, easily accessible, evidence-based system of healthcare that can be applied to a full spectrum of conditions, from chronic disease and mental health to ageing and personal growth.”

The initiative’s mission is to educate the global community about how yoga therapy can restore health for the lifestyle-related conditions today’s generation suffer from, through evidence-based research, innovations and programmes.
