New consumer app reveals skincare’s hidden ingredients

Founder of the SkinNinja app, Jo Osborne created the service to ensure consumers can discover which ingredients are hiding in their skincare products, following her battle with skin cancer.

The free app is designed to make it easier for consumers to find out exactly what health concerns, such as Contact Allergens and Carcinogens, might be in their chosen skincare, cosmetic and personal care products.

SkinNinja pulls a products’ ingredients from its cosmetic database and offers a simple colour-coded grading system to help consumers learn about what’s really in products and whether they are hiding chemicals. It matches world-leading expert evidence from The International Agency for Research on Cancer and The World Allergy Organisation to more than 200k ingredients, across 800k products.

Osborne says: “There was no simple way for me to avoid cancer-causing ingredients in my skincare. Even if it’s just a small amount, I’m entitled to know about it, so I built my own solution. We believe that health information should be a right, not a privilege. It should be transparent and honest – and available to everyone, for free.”
