Record year for UK tourism

Record year for UK tourism

The number of tourists visiting the UK has risen to more than 23 million this year

Latest figures from VisitBritain/VisitEngland show that an extra £872 million in visitor spending was generated across the UK in the last year.

From January to July, there were a record 23.1 million overseas visits, up eight per cent on last year. These visitors spent £13.3 billion, which is up nine per cent. Overseas visits are predicted to increase further, to 39.7 million, by the end of the year, with spending also going up 14 per cent to £25.7 billion.

The figures, announced at VisitBritain/VisitEngland’s 2016-17 annual review, come off the back of strong growth from inbound tourism. Brits are also taking more holidays at home; domestic overnight holidays in England rose to a record 20.4 million during the first half of the year with visitors spending £4.6 billion, up 17 per cent.

John Glen, UK minister for tourism, says: ‘We have seen record-breaking inbound visits and spend this summer, which is testament to our world-class attractions, hotels and spas, and the innovation of our tourism industry. Internationally we are performing strongly in a hugely competitive market and I will continue to work closely with the sector to maintain growth, get the best possible deal as we exit the EU and retain the UK’s position as the must-visit destination.’
