UKSA announces big changes

UKSA announces big changes

The UK Spa Association’s Summer Networking Event, their largest ever, saw the launch of two initiatives.

The event, which had more than 200 attendees and also included a Spa Directors Assembly, was held at South Lodge Spa.

Chairman Adam Chatterley kicked off the event by presenting the newly-created Outstanding Contribution Award to Lisa Barden and Charlie Thompson, to demonstrate the association’s appreciation for the past hard work, passion and dedication.

In a change from usual proceedings, UKSA board members then presented directly to the audience. Following two years of Spa Directors Assemblies, the team has identified two challenges to the spa industry, the first being the huge issue around attracting therapists to the profession. In a bid to turn this around the UKSA has launched a new national campaign – Work For Wellness

Recognising the difficulty in attracting new talent, the campaign will see the UKSA target young people, teachers and parents to change their perception of spa and show it is an industry that can offer career growth and progression. The UKSA will provide its members with materials so they can reach out directly to local schools and help educate youngsters about the opportunities a career in spa and wellness can offer.

A pioneering new initiative between with The University of Derby was also announced, designed to change the perception of the spa sector, raise professionalism, create career aspiration and improve retention of the industry’s skilled workforce. Alongside this, a major research piece will be undertaken, to inform active lobbying and a white paper.

Finally, National Spa Week, set to take place from 4-11 November, will be a trade-only campaign for the first time this year, and focus on the umbrella subject of ‘Workplace Wellness’.
